Big 8-inch tall pair, “End of the Trail,” after the James Earle Fraser 1915 life-size sculpture of a sorrowful Native American Indian on horseback — from our Bookends 202 page: The photo above shows one of these big Galvano Bronze Co. bookends side-by-side with the more common sizes of “End of the Trail” antique bookends.
Made circa 1928 by the Galvano Bronze Company, a pair of vintage electroformed bronze-clad figural book ends, beautiful dark-chocolate patina with verdigris highlights. One of the pair is marked "P. Beneduce" (sculptor), for Paul Beneduce, the artist who created many great pieces for Galvano. The other one may have a shopmark on the base below the tail, but it is unreadable. No. 1912 in Kuritzky and De Costa.
SPECS: Measures about 8.0" tall by 6.1" (horse's nose to tail) and a base that measures about 4.75" by 2.75", the pair weighs in at 5 lbs 2 oz (the Beneduce-signed one weighs 2'13, the other 2'5). In gorgeous original condition, no breaks or tears in the bronze cladding.
